LLM and RAG development, explained
A language model knows the internet. Your business needs it to know your documents.
Large language models can read, write and reason over text at a scale people cannot match. Getting reliable results from them in a business setting takes more than an API key. You need the right model, the right context, a way to measure quality and a plan for cost.
Our LLM engineers help you decide between hosted models such as GPT, Claude and Gemini, and open-weight models such as Llama and Mistral that you can run privately. We build retrieval pipelines so the model answers from your content, and we fine-tune only when prompts and retrieval are not enough.
We also build the less glamorous parts: test sets, automatic evaluation, safety filters, caching and usage dashboards. They are what keep an LLM application dependable after launch and keep your bill predictable.
Evaluation comes before launch, not after. We build a test set of real questions with expected answers, run it on every change to prompts, retrieval or models, and track accuracy, citation quality and cost. That is what lets a team trust the assistant, and what keeps quality from drifting as your documents change.

What decides the cost of LLM development
Cost depends on the approach and the scale of use.
Model choice
Hosted APIs and self-hosted models have different cost profiles.
Data and retrieval complexity
More sources and formats need more engineering.
Fine-tuning needs
Tuning adds data preparation, training and evaluation.
Quality targets
Stricter accuracy and safety needs more testing.
Scale and latency
High traffic and fast responses need careful design.
Deployment environment
Private cloud and on-premise setups cost more than public APIs.
Security and privacy in LLM and RAG development
A security or compliance team will ask where the data goes, who can see it and how quality is checked. These are the safeguards we build into every project.
Where your data lives
Models can run in your own cloud account or on private endpoints, with provider settings that stop your data being used for training. You choose the region.
Access control
Assistants respect the permissions of the person asking. Someone who cannot open a document cannot get its content through a chat window either.
Testing before launch
We build an evaluation set from your real cases and measure accuracy, safety and cost before and after every change, not just once at launch.
Certification and ownership
OZRIT is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified for information security. You own the code, prompts, models you commission and your data.

LLM and RAG development: frequently asked questions
Straight answers on cost, timelines, data, security and ownership.
What is a large language model?
A large language model, or LLM, is an AI model trained on vast amounts of text. It can understand and generate language, answer questions, summarise, translate and write code.
What is RAG, and why does it matter?
RAG stands for retrieval-augmented generation. The system first finds relevant passages in your documents, then gives them to the model to answer. It keeps answers current, specific and traceable, without retraining the model.
When should we fine-tune an LLM?
Fine-tune when you need a consistent style, format or specialised vocabulary that prompts and retrieval cannot deliver. For most knowledge tasks, RAG gives better value and is easier to update.
Should we use a hosted model or run our own?
Hosted models are quicker to start and often more capable. Running open-weight models yourself gives more control over data and cost at scale. We help you compare on accuracy, privacy and total cost.
How much does LLM development cost?
LLM projects are priced by how much content there is and how messy it is, how many systems and users are involved, the accuracy required and where the model is hosted. A retrieval assistant over a clean document set is a modest project, while a private, fine-tuned deployment with strict access rules is larger. A discovery sprint from $1,000 tests the idea on your own documents and ends with a scoped quote.
How long does LLM application development take?
A working prototype usually takes 3 to 5 weeks. A production system with evaluation, security and integrations takes 8 to 16 weeks.
How do you keep LLM answers accurate?
We ground answers in your sources, test against curated questions, measure scores on every change and add fallbacks for uncertain answers.
How do you keep our data private?
We can use private endpoints, run models in your own cloud account or on-premise, mask sensitive fields and keep full audit logs.
Can LLMs work in Indian languages?
Yes. We evaluate models for Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and other languages, and choose or tune the one that performs best for your content.
Can I hire LLM engineers from OZRIT?
Yes. You can add LLM and AI engineers to your team monthly, with a typical ramp-up of 10 to 15 business days.
How do you test an LLM application before launch?
We build an evaluation set from real questions and the answers your experts expect, run it on every change, and score accuracy, grounding in sources, safety and response time. Failures are reviewed by people, and the set grows as new cases appear.
When is RAG a better choice than fine-tuning an LLM?
Choose RAG when answers must come from documents that change, need a visible source or depend on who is asking. Fine-tuning suits a fixed style, format or narrow skill that prompts alone cannot teach. Many projects use RAG first, because it is faster to build, easier to update and easier to check, and add fine-tuning only if testing shows a gap.
What data sources can a RAG system search?
Most business content works: PDFs, Word and slide files, wikis, ticketing and CRM records, email archives, databases and websites. We connect each source, split and index it, keep the index in step with changes, and carry over the permissions of the original system.
Can an LLM assistant respect document permissions?
Yes. We carry each user's access rights into retrieval, so the assistant only searches documents that person may see. Sensitive fields can also be masked before text reaches a model.

- 1An AI consultant reads your note and may reply with a few questions.
- 2We hold a call to understand the problem, your data and the systems involved.
- 3If AI fits, we propose a discovery sprint or a scoped pilot with clear success measures.
